BIOGRAPHY :

His Eminence Metropolitan John of Winnipeg and Canada, (in the world Ivan Stinka) was born in 1935 into a Ukrainian pioneer family in Buchanan, Saskatchewan. He was the youngest of 12 children. Before entering the priesthood, he was a teacher in public schools in rural Saskatchewan and in the city of Saskatoon. He was tonsured a monk in 1974. In 1975 he was ordained a deacon and a priest and on November 27th 1983 Bishop of Saskatoon within the “Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada”. Since 1985 he served as the Archbishop of Edmonton, overseeing parishes in the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. By decision of the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumencal Patriarchate the “Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada” was accepted in April 1990 under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. After the death of Metropolitan Basil Fedak, the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumencal Patriarchate, during its meeting on November 22nd 2005 and under the presidency of His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, elected Archbishop John as the Archbishop of Winnipeg and Metropolitan of Canada for the Ukranian Orthodox Parishes in Canada.
