METROPOLITAN POLYKARPOS OF SPAIN AND PORTUGAL
BIOGRAPHY :
His Eminence Metropolitan Polykarpos of Spain and Portugal, (in the world Panagiotis Stavropoulos) was born on the 15th October 1963 in Navpaktos (Greece). In 1986 he successfully graduates with a Master degree in Theology at the Theological Faculty of the University of Athens. After his military service he continues his studies at the Oriental Institute of the Gregoriana University of Rome. On January 15th, 1990 he was ordained deacon by his mentor Metropolitan Bartholomew of Chalcedon, presently the Ecumenical Patriarch, who also gave him the name of Polykarpos. The next day he was ordained as priest by Metropolitan Alexander of Navpaktos, presently Metropolitan of Mantineia and Kynouria. At the same time he was promoted as an archimandrite. He serves since 1990 the historical church of Saint Georg in Venice. When the Ecumenical Patriarchate created the Archdiocese of Italy he was nominated the first chancellor of it. At the same time he served several new parishes in Italy. In 1998 he received the title of Archimandrite of the Ecumenical Throne. He was the secretary and later the vice-president of the Council of the Archdiocese of Italy and Malta. He repeatedly represented the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Archdiocese of Italy in several meetings, congresses and missions. On April 30, 2007 he was unanimously elected by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople second Metropolitan of Spain and Portugal. He was ordained on Sunday 6th May 2007 by His All Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and quite some hierarchs in the patriarchal church of Saint George in Constantinople. His enthronement will take place on sunday June 16, 2007 in the Orthodox Cathedral of Apostle Andrew and Saint Dimitrios in Madrid.
