METROPOLITAN ANTHONY OF HIERAPOLIS
UKRANIAN ORTHODOX PARISHES IN THE DIASPORA
His Excellency Metropolitan Anthony of Hierapolis, (in the world John Scharba) was born to Dorothy and John Scharba in Sharon, Pa., in 1947. He was ordained to the diaconate on October 1, 1972 and several weeks later, on November 26, 1972 to the priesthood.
In May 1985 he was tonsured monk and after his election he was consecrated bishop on October 6, 1985 for the Ukranian Orthodox Parishes in the USA and the Diaspora.
The Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumencal Patriarchate during its meeting on March 12 1995 under the presidency of His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, examined the appeal of His Excellency Constantine Buggan and his fellow ukranian bishops to the Ecumenical Patriarch and unanimously decided to accept them under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Thereafter the Holy and Sacred Synod proceeded to elect Archbishop Anthony with the title of Archbishop of Hierapolis, to serve the pastoral needs of the Ukranian Orthodox living in the USA.
Metropolitan Anthony of Hierapolis is president of the Church's Consistory.
