BISHOP HILARION OF EDMONTON
UKRANIAN ORTHODOX PARISHES IN CANADA
BIOGRAPHY :
His Grace Bishop Hilarion of Edmonton (in the world Roman Rudnik) was born in Ukraine in 1972. After secundary school he attented the Ecclesiastical Seminary of Kiev from which he graduated in 1992. He then was send to Thessaliniki (Greece) where he graduated from the Theological Faculty of the Aristotle University and was tonsured monk under the name of 'Hilarion' and ordained to the diaconate in 1997 and to the priesthood in 2000 by His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon of Tyroloïs and Serention (Abbot of the Holy Monastery of Vlatadon in Thessaloniki). He continued his theological studies in Canon Law and took a Masters, writing a paper on the 'Canonical relations between the Metropolis of Kiev and the Ecumenical Patriarchate until 1240'. In 2001 he attended lessons english at the University of Illinois in Chicago. At the end of 2002 he was sent to Portugal to serve the new created parish of Saint Panteleimon in Porto. On March 21, 2004 he was elevated to the rank of 'Archimandrite of the Ecumenical Patriarchate'. On the proposal of His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate elected him on January 12th 2005 assistant bishop of His Eminence Metropolitan Epiphanios of Spain and Portugal, with the title of 'Bishop of Telmissos'. His episcopal ordination took place in Constantinople on Saturday 29th January 2005. On the proposal of His Eminence Metropolitan John of Winnipeg, head of the Ukranian Orthodox Parishes in Canada under the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate elected him on October 21, 2008 as diocesan Bishop of Edmonton. His enthronement took place on Sunday October 26, 2008.
